Psychotechnical tests and medical exam: which comes first?

Updated on 5 October 20265 min read

When your case requires psychotechnical tests, arrange them before the medical examination so you can bring the results. These are separate appointments: one with the psychologist, another with an approved doctor or the medical board. Booking a board appointment does not book the tests.

Start with the decision you received

The official guidance on judicial suspension requires psychotechnical assessment for a suspension lasting six months or more. It advises organising the assessment before the driving ban ends. Licence cancellation and invalidation follow different procedures: check the decision and the invalidation guidance.

Write down the reason for the sanction, its duration, the end date and every examination mentioned. The word “suspension” alone does not tell you which calendar to book. If the notice is unclear, use the official contact it provides to establish the right procedure first.

Check both professionals

Use the official departmental list to find a psychologist declared to the prefect. A commercial listing alone is not proof that the professional meets the requirement for your case.

The medical examination may belong with a board or an approved doctor outside the board. Our medical board guide explains the distinction. An earlier appointment at a different type of practice is useful only if that professional can handle your case.

Coordinate the dates and documents

  • Read the medical appointment date and the document checklist in the notice.
  • Arrange the assessment early enough to receive the report before that visit.
  • Check the results' accepted validity period in the official documents for your case.
  • Arrange any required laboratory tests separately.
  • Keep the confirmations and bring the results with the sanction decision and medical form.

This preparation does not establish the date you may drive again. Completing the tests, receiving a medical opinion and restoring driving rights are different steps.

When the medical calendar has no availability

Find the competent office through the local medical board guides, then open its appointment calendar. Medical appointment waiting times depend on local openings. A psychologist's booking does not reserve a place before the board.

For a calendar covered by Perfecture, you can check live availability or activate an appointment alert. You make the reservation yourself on the official website. Monitoring does not include the tests or guarantee an appointment.

After the assessment and medical visit

Bring the requested documents even if you submitted some during an earlier procedure. After the examination, read about the steps following a favourable medical opinion. The applicable notice and the competent professional's instructions remain the reference for your case. The linked official resources are in French.
