Medical board lab tests: which instructions apply?

Updated on 5 October 20265 min read

Use the examinations requested for your case by the prefecture or the doctors. Find the appointment notice and its supporting documents before going to a laboratory. The reason for the examination, the required tests and the accepted age of results can differ. A checklist from another department is not a substitute for your instructions.

Find the applicable document checklist

Start with the confirmation email and its attachments. Then check the official booking page and its downloadable documents. The health questionnaire, medical opinion form and instructions for the laboratory may be separate files.

For example, the Sarlat medical board page separates examinations for alcohol, drugs and both. The Ain prefecture page links its own document list and questionnaire. Use the instructions for the office receiving you.

Check four things before arranging tests

  • The stage of your case: first visit, renewed medical validity or additional examinations requested after an earlier visit.
  • The requested examinations: use their names in the official document; do not add or remove tests based on forum discussions.
  • The date: compare the accepted age of results with the medical appointment date, not the date you booked it.
  • The format: check whether originals, a report or a particular supporting document are required.

If an old document conflicts with your notice, ask the competent service or professional which instruction applies. Do not arrange examinations simply on the assumption that they will make the file complete.

Why there is no single checklist for every board

Sarlat requests certain results less than fifteen days old. The published Ain checklist also distinguishes between examinations and successive visits. These examples explain why local instructions matter; they are not a prescription for another department.

Coordinate the laboratory date with the medical appointment. If you also need psychotechnical assessment, read our guide to the order of tests and the medical visit.

Prepare the file without interpreting the results

Keep the results with the other medical board documents. The laboratory and doctors handle questions about examinations and their interpretation. Perfecture monitors appointment availability; it does not assess fitness to drive or provide laboratory thresholds for predicting the opinion.

If you still need a date, use the local medical board guide to reach the correct calendar. The guides for Sarlat and Bourg-en-Bresse help prepare those local procedures. An alert can report availability, but booking and laboratory examinations remain separate steps. Official instructions linked here are in French.
